KOLKATA: East Bengal sought to depend on youth while looking for a change in its fortunes in the new season. Becoming the first I-League team to announce its squad for the coming season, East Bengal put out a list of 28 players who would be donning the red-and-gold jersey. The coach Subhas Bhowmick, who was hopeful of signing them all, said that there may be a few additions and subtractions but the squad would not exceed 32 players. East Bengal retained the services of Mehrajuddin Wadoo, Syed Rahim Nabi, Sanju Pradhan, Mehtab Hussain, Alvito DCunha and Renedy Singh among the prominent names. The big names that have been left out are goalkeeper Subrata Paul, midfielder Jayanta Sen, defender M. Suresh and national team striker Sunil Chhetri, who apparently didn’t agree to the money offered by the club. New namesThere are a few new names including Subhas Singh (Air India), Govin Singh (Churchill Brothers) and Harmanjot Khabra (Sporting Clube de Goa). This is in addition to a few young players picked up from the club’s junior side and other local teams. — Principal Correspondent
