Areshchenko retains lead

MUMBAI: Grandmaster Alexander Areshchenko (2657) of Ukraine, agreed for a seventh round draw after exchanging 16 moves with GM Koneru Humpy (2612) to remain ahead of the pack with six and a half points at the 2nd Mumbai Mayors Cup International Open Chess Tournament, conducted by Venus Chess Academy.

It was the first draw after six consecutive wins for the second seed.

India’s highest rated player in the event, fourth seed Koneru Humpy, shares the second spot (six points) with sixth seed GM Andrei Deviatkin (2566) and three others. The Russian agreed to a quick 12-move draw with countryman GM Vladimir Belov (2623) in round seven.
