Kidambi set to become GM

NEW DELHI: International Master S. Kidambi is set to become India’s 19th Grandmaster after making the title-norm on way to the sixth place in the Dubai Open chess tournament on Monday.

An IM since 2000, Kidambi is now armed with the stipulated three norms. Having reached a rating of 2501 in October last year, the 26-year-old Bharat Petroleum employee has already met all technical requirements to become a GM.

Kidambi, presently rated at 2487, scored 6.5 points to tie for the fourth spot and gained 19 rating points. Armenia’s Tigran Kotanjian topped a three-way tie at seven points to win the title.
