Alize Cornet loses

ROME: French teenager Alize Cornet, a runner-up in Rome last year, was knocked out in the second round of the Italian Open on Tuesday.

Cornet, the 13th seed, lost 6-4, 6-1 to Kateryna Bondarenko. Bondarenko, a 22-year-old Ukrainian, is ranked 61 in the world.

That match was the only one to be completed at the Foro Italico before a rain storm forced a suspension of play.

In Oeiras, Portugal, third-seeded David Ferrer won 16 points in a row as he recovered from a weak start to beat Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-4, 6-1 in the first round of the Estoril Open.

Gimeno-Traver, targetting Ferrer’s weak backhand, twice broke his opponent to take a 3-0 lead in the opening set. But the 14th-ranked Ferrer won four games in a row in a powerful fightback that gave him his first match victory at the outdoor clay-court event.

In the women’s event, Sabrine Lisicki, seeded fourth, triumphed 6-2, 6-2 over Kirsten Flipkens, while seventh-seeded Shahar Peer rallied to beat local favourite Michelle Larcher de Brito 4-6, 6-0, 6-0.
