BACK TO FORM: M.S. Dhoni scored an unbeaten half-century to take Chennai Super Kings to a good total.

EAST LONDON: Fabulous batting and bowling outweighed its horrible fielding as Chennai Super Kings beat Deccan Chargers by 78 runs in East London on Monday.

Shadab Jakati (four for 22) bowled out Deccan for 100 after skipper M.S. Dhoni’s unbeaten half-century had allowed Chennai to post 178 for three in its allotted 20 overs.

Jakati and Muralitharan (two for 11) sent Deccan Chargers’ lower order packing after the pacemen had accounted for the top order.

Super Kings’ bowlers began sensationally. Albie Morkel trapped Adam Gilchrist on the back foot with a first-ball yorker and Sudeep Tyagi scattered Gibbs’ stumps with another fast and full projectile.

Laxman out for duck

V.V.S. Laxman survived six balls before he chipped Morkel to Jakati at mid-wicket. The Hyderabadi departed without scoring, as did Gilchrist and Gibbs, and Chargers was three down for one run after 2.2 overs.

New man Dwayne Smith led a charmed life as two of his skiers found no takers in the field. Smith (49, 23b, 2x4, 5x6) made Chennai pay for its lapses, swinging Tyagi to mid-wicket for six and then wading into Morkel scoring six, six and a four.

Smith and Rohit Sharma added 72 runs for the fourth wicket in six overs before Jakati claimed both. Chargers was 79 for five at the 10-over mark, but Jakati and Murali left it with no chance.

Earlier, Dhoni’s 58 not out (37b, 6x4, 1x6) helped Chennai post 178 for three. Hayden (43, 26b, 5x4, 3x6) assisted his side to 53 without loss after six overs before he top-edged Shoaib Mohammed to third man. Dhoni promoted himself up the order and in the company of M. Vijay (31, 33b, 2x4, 1x6) took Super Kings to 84 for one at the midway mark.

Chargers’ slow bowlers appeared to tighten things after the break, but Suresh Raina hammered T.S. Suman (4, 6, 6) in the 15th over to take Chennai to 130 for two.

Raina 32 (19b, 1x4, 2x6) was out to R.P. Singh but Dhoni carried on and brought up his fifty in the last over with a pulled boundary off R.P. Singh. Chennai scored 48 runs in the last five overs.
