“Congress, BJP using money power to win polls”

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India on Monday accused the Congress and the BJP of using money and muscle power to try and win Lok Sabha elections.

In a statement, the party alleged that election observers were doing nothing and seemed helpless despite its representations. “There is no level playing field being provided to the candidates of the parties with limited resources,” it said.

The CPI, which has fielded Shrichand Tanwar from South Delhi, complained that the Congress and the BJP had spent more money than stipulated on hoardings for canvassing.

Alleging that the party did not receive support from the police, it said: “It was shocking that instead of facilitation in fair play, obstructions and harassment by the police personnel to our campaigners was commonplace.”

Harassment

The party alleged that vehicles duly permitted along with a sound system were halted on some pretext or the other. Even the women campaigners were not spared, it charged.

The party has now sought intervention of the Election Commission, urging it to use “the authority at its command to check the money and liquor distribution, which has already begun”.
