NEW DELHI: Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh held a road show across the Walled City of Delhi on Monday canvassing for his party candidate for the Lok Sabha from Chandni Chowk, Suhail Ahmed Khan. Cheered by a large number of supporters, Mr. Singh along with the candidate and his wife kicked off the road show on an open jeep from near Gate No.1 of the historic Jama Masjid around 11 a.m. The procession passed through Matia Mahal, Pahari Imli Chowk, Chitley Kabar, Suiwalan, Tiraha Bairam Khan, Delhi Gate and Minto Road Chowk before culminating at Turkman Gate around 1 p.m. At the end of the road show, Mr. Singh said Manmohan Singh was the Prime Ministerial candidate of the Congress but after elections the United Progressive Alliance leaders would decide who should be the coalition’s candidate. About Kalyan Singh, the Samajwadi Party leader said the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh “had come over on his own and joined hands with the party to ensure defeat of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the State”. “For the first time, I saw Mr. Singh not accompanied by any film personality. However, his presence attracted a large number of supporters outside the Jama Masjid. Even the police had problems containing the crowd that kept shouting slogans in support of the Samajwadi Party,” said Mr. Khan, the party candidate from Chandni Chowk. Claiming that he was with the BJP for 23 years, Mr. Khan said he joined the Samajwadi Party about 18 months ago on the invitation of Mr. Singh. “I left the BJP as I found that the party did not have a clear stand on important issues,” said Mr. Khan.
