TIRUCHI: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) proposed by the Central Government for Tamil Nadu at Tiruchi is likely to get functional from 2009-10. A temporary building with a few classrooms has been identified in MHD (Magneto Hydro Dynamics) campus on the premises of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), at a short distance from the Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM). The IIM will function here till full-fledged infrastructure is created on the 200-acre permanent site identified on Bharathidasan University premises. Collector T. Soundiah inspected the building recently. Expressing satisfaction over the facilities, the Collector said the district administration had forwarded the proposal to the Higher Education Secretary for further action. The Ministry of Human Resource Development is keen to accord a functional status to the IIM-Tiruchi at the earliest, it is learnt. The institute will be among the six new IIMs in the country which has seven IIMs. Though there is no indication on whether admissions will be made at the proposed IIM-Tiruchi during 2009, sources said that the temporary building would begin functioning as an administrative centre. In a year’s time, faculty recruitment is expected, and management development programmes will be conducted. MentoringThe IIM-Bangalore has been vested with the responsibility of mentoring IIM-Tiruchi, sources said.
