Nadal reigns supreme

ROME: World No.1 Rafael Nadal won a record fourth Rome Masters title on Sunday, beating defending champion Novak Djokovic 7-6(2), 6-2 in the final.

The Spaniard took the first set in a tiebreak after Serbian Djokovic had twice recovered from breaks as well as destroying a racket after losing serve in the 11th game.

Nadal broke the third seed twice in the second set to continue his stunning form, sealing victory with a superlative forehand pass.

The result also meant Djokovic will surrender the No. 3 spot in the world rankings to Andy Murray on May 11 even though the 21-year-old Scot lost his opening match in Rome to Argentine qualifier Juan Monaco.

Kuznetsova triumphs

In the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova stunned World No. 1 Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-3 to win the event.

Kuznnetsova, the World No. 9, was more consistent than fellow Russian Safina, holding her serve throughout to clinch her first tournament of the year on her second match point after an hour and 19 minutes.

Safina, who topped the rankings on April 20 for the first time, lost her third final this year after falling at the last hurdle in Sydney and the Australian Open.

“It is a great to be here and win,” said Kuznetsova.

The results:

At Rome (Rome Masters): Final: Rafael Nadal bt Novak Djokovic 7-6(2), 6-2.

At Stuttgart (Porsche Grand Prix): Final: Svetlana Kuznetsova bt Dinara Safina 6-4, 6-3.

Semifnals: Safina bt Flavia Pennetta 3-6, 7-5, 6-0. — Agencies
