MUMBAI: Sagar Shah upset the third seed Vladimir Belov of Russia won in 36 moves in a third round upset at the 2nd Mumbai Mayors Cup International Open chess tournament at the Goregaon Sports Club on Sunday. Sagar, playing black, employed the Queens Indian defence and capitalized on a mistake by the Grandmaster. O.T. Anilkumar was another Indian to make a mark on the third day. Playing black in a French defence he outwitted GM Petr Kostenko of Kazakhstan in a marathon game lasting 102 moves. India’s Koneru Humpy defeated Saurabh Kherdekar in a Queen’s Indian defence after 53 moves. The results: Third round (Indians unless specified): Evgeny Miroshnichenko (Ukr) bt Aditya Udeshi; Nirmal lost to Areshchenko Alexander (Ukr); Vladimir Belov (Rus) lost to Sagar Shah; Saurabh Kherdekar lost to Koneru Humpy; Abhijeet Gupta bt Gurpreet Pal Singh; G.A. Stany lost to Andrei Deviatkin (Rus); Alexander Zubarev (Ukr) bt T. Purushothaman; Sohan Phadke lost to Georgy Timoshenko (Ukr); Fenil Shah drew with Zia-ur-Rehman (Ban); Neelotpal Das drew with Rishipal Singh; Petr Kostenko (Kaz) lost to O.T. Anilkumar.
