Chennai: The Tamil Nadu athletes, who donned India colours and performed with distinction winning four medals (three of them gold) in the recent Thailand Asian Open Track and Field meet at Bangkok, were felicitated at a special function by the Tamil Nadu Athletics Association on Saturday. Gayathri Govindaraj of St. Joseph’s College collected a brace of gold medals (100 hurdles and triple jump) while S. Sarasarathy picked up a gold medal (javelin) and a bronze (shot put) during the four day meet. Speakers led by TNAA President, Walter I. Davaram, lauded the splendid performances of the competitors and hoped they would go from strength to strength in the series of international meets ahead. Mr. Davaram described their showing as “beyond expectations. Handsome tributes were paid to the achievers by T.K. Rajendran, IGP and Vice-President, TNAA, and R. Arumugam, President, Chennai District AA. Neela Sivalingaswamy, Secretary, TNAA, and Treasurer, AFI, proposed a vote of thanks. The performers: S. Saraswathy (seniors) Javelin (gold) 49.40m; shot put (bronze) 13.59m. Gayathri Govindaraj, (juniors) 100 hurdles (gold) 14.26s; Triple jump (gold) 12.69m. P. Muthuswamy (seniors) (fifth in 110 hurdles) and S. Radhika (fourth in long jump). — Special Correspondent
