VISAKHAPATNAM: A four-day-old bride was struck dead by lightning in the industrial area of Gajuwaka on Saturday evening.

The tragedy occurred when Anita, 21, who married an autorickshaw driver after a year-long love affair, went up the terrace of their house in Vikasnagar of Pedagantyada to bring some clothes.

Welcome showers

Meanwhile, people in various parts of the city were taken by surprise when thundershowers and lightning continued for nearly an hour. This led to power interruption and traffic snarls at several places. Some telephone lines also turned dead.

The sudden change in climate gave welcome relief from soaring day temperatures. The city was reeling under summer heat, with mercury going up by three to four degrees above the normal temperature.

An official of the Cyclone Warning Centre said due to intense heating, cumulonimbus clouds very often develop during May brining thundershowers. The wind conditions were also favourable for thundershowers. “It is not an unusual phenomenon,” he stated.
