Work on BRTS corridors on course

Project taken up under JNNURM

Pig farm demolished as part of the project

Some families are yet to be vacated

VISAKHAPATNAM: Work is going on on the two Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridors taken up under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission in the city. The Simhachalam corridor links Pendurthi to the Dwaraka Bus Station via Vepagunta, Gosala, Adavivaram, Hanumanthavaka and Maddilapalem running into about 18 km.

On the Simhachalam corridor, the work on about 8 km stretch has been going on. The laying of a 6 km 200-ft road at Mudasarlova earlier by the corporation has now come in handy for the BRTS. However, the road has been in various stages of completion earlier and now forms part of the BRTS corridor, says Superintendent Engineer (projects) T. Moses Kumar.

As a part of the BRTS, the pig farm of the animal husbandry department has been demolished after an alternative is provided spending about Rs. 2 crores.

Residents shifted

Besides, residents of Pedagadili and other villages falling in the corridor are to be shifted. As part of it, about 370 families have been allotted housing sites at a housing layout near Arilova. However, they are yet to be given compensation to the structures and a compensation package is being worked out for those affected by the laying of corridors.

Housing provision

Besides, at Ramakrishnapuram near Adavivaram, some families living on a government site are to be vacated. They will be provided housing near Pineapple Colony under the JNNURM.

On the Pendurthi corridor too, about 5 km of road is available for work. As the road has been cleared of encroachments for the replacement of the Tatidpudi pipeline, it came in handy for widening for the BRTS, says Mr. Moses Kumar. The bottleneck for the Pendurty corridor is the thickly-populated Kancharapalem area. It is estimated that on both the corridors about 3,000 families will be affected. The GVMC also plans to offer transferable development rights to those losing properties.

About 15 to 20 per cent of the work on the two corridors is completed.
