CONTROLLED AGGRESSION: J.P. Duminy’s late charge took Mumbai Indians to a fighting total.

EAST LONDON: J.P. Duminy smashed an unbeaten 52 off 37 balls to help Mumbai Indians register a nine-run victory against a fighting Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League match at Buffalo Park here on Friday.

Duminy hit four towering sixes and a four to propel Mumbai to 148 for six after skipper Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and elected to bat. Knight Riders, despite Brad Hodge’s brilliant 73 off 60 balls, could manage only 139 for six in its reply.

Duminy took charge of the proceedings after openers Sanath Jayasuriya (6) and Sachin Tendulkar (34), and Harbhajan (6) were dismissed by Knight Riders within eight overs.

Ashok Dinda gave Knight Riders the breakthrough in the fourth over, having Jayasuriya caught by Morne van Wyk. Dinda was in the thick of action again when he caught Harbhajan off Murali Kartik.

At the other end, Tendulkar continued with his big hitting. He smashed Ajit Agarkar for a four and a six in the eighth over before perishing in the same over. Tendulkar’s 30-ball 34 contained two sixes and three fours. At the halfway stage, Mumbai Indians was struggling at 61 for three. Abhishek Nayar followed soon, contributing just 10 before losing his wicket to Hodge.

Graham Napier, who joined Duminy, was dropped by Brendon McCullum off Chris Gayle in the 14th over. The Kolkata skipper, however, made amends to leave Mumbai reeling at 96 for five.

Duminy launched into an assault at this stage. With Ajinkya Rahane, the South African added 35 in just three overs. In the last over bowled by Dinda, Duminy hit two sixes, his second coming off the final ball of the innings.

Double blow

Knight Riders began its chase on a disappointing note. It lost openers Sourav Ganguly (0) and Chris Gayle (7) quickly, as Mumbai Indians pace spearhead Zaheer Khan inflicted a double blow.

However, Hodge stabilised the innings in the company of van Wyk (32, 35b, 3x4). The two added 89 for the third wicket.

Knight Riders looked to be in control of the match at this stage, but the loss of van Wyk and a mounting asking rate proved too much in the end. — PTI
