Asher Noria HYDERABAD: India’s Asher Noria clinched the gold in the double trap event of the International juniors’ competition at Suhl, Gemany, the first Minimum Qualifying Score (MQS) competition for the 2010 Youth Olympic Games at Singapore. The 16-year-old Hyderabadi, with a score of 190/200, equalled the Olympic record of Beijing Games gold medallist Walton Eller of the USA. The scores posted at the above event surpass those in the Olympics and several senior World Cups. In the qualifiers too, he matched the Olympic mark, also held by Eller, with 145/150, cracking a perfect 50/50 in his last round. The other Indians in the fray fell by the wayside, but the national trio of Noria, Sangram Dahiya and Chetan Sansanwal went on to clinch the team silver, missing out on the gold by just two points to Russia. “Before the first shot, I told myself ‘this is my time and I am going to win it. Most of the credit goes to my father, Gusti Noria, and Ronjan Sodhi (world record holder),’” Asher told The Hindu on returning to his hometown. The Class XII student of Hyderabad Public School, Begumpet, had finished fourth in the last edition of the same championship, losing out, incidentally, to the Russian Miroshnichenko in a tie-shoot for the bronze. A gold medallist in the Singapore Open and the Commonwealth Youth Games last year, Noria also topped the senior trials in the double trap held at Pune in March with a tally of 143. The scores: 1. Asher Noria 190 (145+45) India, 2. Vladimir Miroshnichenko 189 (144+45) Russia, 3. Filip Praj 185 (143+42) Slovakia.
