Rashien Samuel, Spoorthi Shivalingaiah and J.S. Arun Raj with their trophies BANGALORE: Rashien Samuel of Bangalore defeated Tamil Nadu’s Monish Rajer in a tightly contested boys’ under-18 singles final of the AITA Talent Series junior tennis championship here on Friday. It Rashien’s consistency which helped him clinch the title. As the match (which lasted 90 minutes) wore on Monish Rajer conceded crucial points through unforced errors. Spoorthi Shivalingaiah bagged a double in the girls’ section, winning both the under-18 and under-16 titles. In under-18 section, the 14-year-old stunned top seed Preethi Ujjini 6-0, 7-5. In the morning session, Spoorthi shrugged off a loss in the first set to overcome second-seeded S.P. Ritu 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the under-16 category. The results (finals): Boys: Under-16: J.S. Arun Raj (Ker) bt Rohan Gaonkar 6-1, 6-2. Under-18: Rashien Samuel bt Monish Rajer (TN) 7-6(3), 7-6(6). Doubles: Monish & Arun Prashanth (TN) bt J.S. Arun Raj & H. Suraj (Ker) 6-2, 6-1. Girls: Under-16: Spoorthi Shivalingaiah bt S.P. Ritu 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Under-18: Spoorthi bt Preethi Ujjini 6-0, 7-5.
