Coimbatore: The second leg of the Indian Grand Prix athletics championship, sponsored by the Park Institutions and organised by the Tamil Nadu Athletic Association under the auspices of the Athletics Federation of India, will be held at the Nehru Stadium here on May 8. Briefing media persons here on Friday, the President of the State association, W.I. Davaram, said besides top Indian athletes the championship will also witness the participation of the Malaysian national athletics team. “This is the first time we have Malaysian athletes taking part in an Indian GP. Even the Sri Lankans showed keen interest but could not make it due to the current political situation,” he added. To attract the crowd and add some spice to the four-hour extravaganza, the organisers have planned a sky diving show by the Indian Air Force and a few other cultural programmes. The Indian Grand Prix will be followed by the Tamil Nadu College of Engineering Silver Jubilee 82nd State senior meet. Nine hundred athletes are expected to take part in the two day meet, which will serve as a selection trial to pick the State team for the 15th Federation Cup championship scheduled to begin at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on June 24. Team Malaysia: Men: Muhammed Zaiful Zainal Abidur & Mohd. Zafril Zuslaini (400m); Vadivellan Mahendran (1500m); Adi Aliffudin Hussein (shot put). Women: Yap Jeng Tzan (discus). — Sports Reporter
