Dearth of good films: T.V. Chandran

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Sub-standard films posed the biggest threat to Malayalam cinema, filmmaker T.V. Chandran has said.

He was speaking at a meet-the-press programme organised by the Trivandrum Press Club here on Thursday.

“Cinema is not a medium to be used as a means to achieve one’s personal goals. The real crisis here is that people are not trying to make good films,” he said.

“My films have evolved from crisis. Other crises in Malayalam cinema do not affect me,” Mr. Chandran said. He said he ‘was not equipped’ to decide the ways of the industry.

Talking about his latest production ‘Bhoomi Malayalam,’ which releases on Friday, Mr. Chandran said the film chronicled the lives of seven women hailing from different communities and parts of Kerala. “All these women live in fears of different kinds. Fear is the common thread that links the lives of these women. And each of them reacts to it differently. Some surrender to their situations while some are dejected. But there are also women who win in spite of all the adversities. One of the objectives of this film is to portray such women,” he said.

Mr. Chandran said he felt obliged to make ‘Bhoomi Malayalam’ which is based on situations and incidents that only natives of Kerala could relate to.

One of the issues portrayed in the film is the plight of the victims of political violence in Kannur. The award-winning filmmaker said he had tried a subtle comment on the changes in the stance of the Communist party by portraying the issue in the film.
