NIFE Indian GP on Sunday

KOCHI: The NIFE Indian Grand Prix, the country’s athletics season-opener, will be held at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Sunday. Nearly 150 athletes will be seen in action in the four-hour long event which will begin in the afternoon.

“Most of the national campers who are preparing for next year’s Commonwealth Games will be seen in action,” said Tony Daniel, the Athletics Federation of India’s Joint Secretary, here on Thursday. “Four Malaysian athletes will also be competing here.”

There will be 10 events in the men’s section and eight for women.

Preeja Sreedharan, R. Rajeev, S.R. Bindu, Chitra Soman, Tintu Luka, Maha Singh and Mandeep Kaur are some of the prominent athletes expected in Kochi.

The Kochi event will be followed by the second and third rounds of the Indian Grand Prix which will be held in Coimbatore (May 8) and Chennai (May 14) and the total prize-money on offer is Rs. 15 lakh. — Principal Correspondent
