BANGALORE: Rohan Gaonkar of Karnataka, the only surviving seed in the boys’ under-16 singles, entered the final of the AITA Talent Series (under-18 and under-16) tennis championship here. On Thursday, Rohan defeated Thomas Prem Kumar of Tamil Nadu 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals. The fourth-seeded Rohan, who played an attacking game, raced ahead in the first set with a double break. Prem, who had trouble with his first serve and backhand returns, fought back in the second after he was down 1-5. With Rohan, making unforced errors in a bid to wrap up the match, Prem cut the deficit to 4-5. Rohan, however, tightened his game and took the match on his serve in the 10th. Spoorthi in two finalsIn the girls’ singles, Spoorthi Shivalingaiah entered the finals of both the under-16 and under-18 singles. Spoorthi beat the third seed S.P. Ritu in the under-18 category and in the under-16 section she defeated Syeda Rehanuma of AP. The results (semifinals): Boys: Under-16: Rohan Gaonkar bt Thomas Prem Kumar (TN) 6-1, 6-4; J.S. Arun Raj bt H. Suraj 6-2, 6-3 . Under-18: Singles: Rashien Samuel bt J.S. Arun Raj 6-1, 6-2; Monish Rajer (TN) bt Nikhil Reddy 6-3, 6-0. Doubles: Monish & Arun Prashanth bt Keerthinathan & Prathik Chakma 7-5, 6-1; Arun Raj & H. Suraj bt C. Hemanth Kumar & S. Raghavendra 6-1, 7-6(4). Girls: Under-16: S.P. Ritu bt Preethi Ujjini 6-1, 6-3; S. Spoorthi bt Syeda Rehanuma (AP) 6-2, 6-2. Under-18: Preethi Ujjini bt Pooja R. Patil 6-3, 6-4; S. Spoorthi bt S.P. Ritu 6-4, 6-3.
