Margao: Midhun Wilwet scored a hat-trick as Kerala recorded a thumping 7-1 victory over Arunachal Pradesh in the cluster VI match of the under-21 National football championship, played at Nehru Stadium in Fatorda. Arunachal began well to surge ahead in the 13th minute through Nagapa Karlo, off a pass from Onyok Pajing. Undeterred by the setback, Kerala equalised in the 35th minute through Wilwet off a pass from Nerbin J to bring the scores level at half time. However, Arunachal ran out of steam in the second half and surrendered meekly to its rivals. Nerbin J, who combined well with Wilwet upfront to trouble the rival defence constantly, put Kerala ahead in the 65th minute when he found the back of the net off a cross from Wilwet. The goal opened the flood gates for Kerala as Wilwet increased the lead three minutes later off a pass from Nerbin. Two minutes later, Wilwet completed his hattrick off a combined move between Nerbin and Swaraj, the latter sending a cross to Wilwet to net it in. Swaraj, then scored through a solo effort in the 74th minute and then scored again with a header off a cross from Wilwet in the 80th minute before Sujith rounded off the tally in the 85th minute to give Kerala an impressive start. Convincing winIn another cluster IV match, Assam scored a convincing 2-0 win over Madhya Pradesh at the Curtorim ground. Dominating the first half, Assam held more of the ball possession and exchanges, and marched ahead in the 28th minute through Sarbanand. Apurba Phukan made sure his team collected full points as he doubled his team’s lead in the 55th minute. — PTI
