YOKOHAMA: India’s star paddler Achanta Sharath Kamal beat back the challenge of Norway’s Wang Jianfeng to advance to the second round in the men’s singles event at the World table tennis championships here on Thursday. Kamal, having won the first two games easily, overcame a fightback to prevail in six games 11-2, 11-6, 8-11, 8-11, 11-5, 12-10. However, it was a day to forget for the women with K. Shamini, Poulomi Ghatak, Mouma Das and Kasturi Chakraborty exiting in the opening around with only National champion Shamini able to take a game off her opponent. In other action, three-time European doubles champion and the semifinalist in the 2003 championships, Tamara Boros of Croatia, became the biggest casualty in the women’s singles first round Top favourites, led by Chinese world number ones Wang Hao (men) and Zhang Yining (women), waltzed into the second round with comfortable victories.
