THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government is actively considering a Bill to provide for the establishment of a welfare fund for gold workers. In his May Day message, released here on Thursday, Labour Minister P.K. Gurudasan said the government had also decided to chalk out welfare schemes for Malayalis returning from the Gulf and various other countries on account of the global economic crisis. It has also initiated measures to implement a welfare scheme for contract workers who have arrived in the State from various parts of the country, the Minister said. Mr. Gurudasan said the government had done much for the welfare of the working population over the last three years. These included extension of coverage of welfare schemes to all sections of workers through an amendment to the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act and the Small Scale Estate Workers Welfare Fund Act and enhancement of wages and welfare benefits available to various categories of workers and indigent persons. ESI medical collegeSteps are on for setting up the country’s first ever medical college under the Employees State Insurance Scheme at Parippally in Kollam. The ESI Corporation has also been told to set up a dental college at Ezhukone and nursing colleges connected to various hospitals under the corporation. The government has also removed the ceiling on medical assistance for ESI members and empanelled government and private hospitals that could provide tertiary medical care to those needing specialised healthcare, Mr. Gurudasan said.
