Thiruvananthapuram: The Cantonment police on Wednesday arrested a 26-year-old physician on charges of rape and cheating. The accused, Jasim A. Rahim of ‘Al Hamra’ House, Kottarakara, was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by a 29-year-old woman doctor who worked with him during his tenure as house surgeon at the General Hospital here. ‘Function’ at templeThe police said Jasim ‘garlanded’ the woman at a city temple last year. He portrayed the function as a ‘legal act of marriage’ to persuade the woman to live with him as his wife. The woman did not know that the marriage was not recorded and hence not legitimised, the police said. The couple lived together in the city for a year. Investigators said Jasim forced the complainant to medically terminate pregnancy. They said he had been booked separately for this offence under section 313 of the Indian Penal Code. The complainant said Jasim abandoned her and stated that she realised the cheating much later. The woman hails from Tamil Nadu. The Judicial First Class Magistrate-III, Philip Thomas, remanded Jasim in judicial custody for 14 days.
