Vellore district a model in healthcare, says Subburaj

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: Vellore district has become a model in healthcare to the country, thanks to improvement and upgrading of primary health centres in the district, V.K. Subburaj, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, has said.

He was participating in a function organised in connection with the release of ‘The Radiance,’ the annual magazine of the Government Vellore Medical College (GVMC), on the college premises in Adukkamparai on Wednesday. Mr. Subburaj said that the number of child deliveries in PHCs in Vellore district had increased considerably, thanks to improvement of facilities.

A total of 1,400 deliveries took place in a year in the PHCs in the district. The same number of deliveries took place in a year in the GVMC.

Mr. Subburaj said that though medical facilities in the country have increased, infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate in the country remained high.

The incidence of cancer was above 10 per cent, heart diseases above 30 per cent and blindness and vision deficiency above 25 per cent. But, Tamil Nadu was an exception to the condition prevailing in the country as it had performed better in the above health parameters, thanks to the presence of good medical colleges and hospitals and quality doctors in the State.

Mr. Subburaj said that as against a requirement of 650 medical colleges in the country to cater for the entire population, there were only 275 medical colleges in India. Sixty-five per cent of the colleges were in the four southern States of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Bihar had only six medical colleges. It was possible to create a healthy and disease-free nation only by producing good doctors, he said.

C. Vamsadhara, dean, GVMC, received the first copy of the college magazine. S. Ashok, Vice-Principal, GVMC, E. Sivakumar, medical superintendent, and A. Raja, ‘pattimanram’ speaker, spoke. B. Pradeep, president, Students’ Council, GVMC, welcomed the gathering. S. Nithya, general secretary, students’ council, R.J. Janane, magazine editor, M. Saravanan, magazine staff adviser, and J. Mohanakrishnan, assistant magazine editor, spoke.
