WELL DONE: T. Venkatachalam, Head, Department of Chemistry, Bishop Heber College, presenting the award to the students, who excelled in cricket at the annual sports felicitation day in Tiruchi on Saturday. — TIRUCHI: It was a moment to relish for the young sportsmen of Bishop Heber College (BHC), who were honoured for their achievements in 2008-09 at the ‘Annual Sports Felicitation Day,’ organised by the college recently. BHC students asserted their supremacy in tennis and cricket at the Bharathidasan University inter-collegiate tournaments winning the titles for the thirteenth and eleventh time respectively. BHC is also the reigning Tiruchi District Cricket Association (TDCA) first division champion. Representing Tiruchi in the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) under-22 inter-district cricket tournament R. Shanmugaraja and V. Pradeep Krishna were involved in an unbeaten third-wicket partnership of 386 runs in the quarterfinal match against Sivaganga and helped their team register victory. BHC emerged Bharathidasan University champion in table tennis and runner-up in basketball and body building. B. Arul Senthil was the varsity champion in chess. A total of 19 students from the college represented Bharathidasan University in various sports at inter-varsity tourneys. “It has been a good performance by our boys at tournaments conducted at various levels. And we felt it would be fine to recognise their efforts. The felicitation function for the sports achievers of our college will be an annual feature,” said Director of Physical Education L.C. John, adding that the gesture would motivate the youngsters to perform even better in the future. Head, Department of Chemistry of the college, T. Venkatachalam gave away the prizes in the presence of Vice-Principal D. Prabakaran. Principal M. Marcus Diepen Boominathan commended the students.
