Billiards & Snooker
Chennai: Varun Kumar beat M.C. Manoj 4-0 in the best-of-seven-frame points-format final of the CAMS Open billiards tournament here on Wednesday. This was the 25-year-old Varun’s first ever billiards title. The match began with Manoj gaining an 89-4 ascendancy in the first frame, but Varun clawed back to parity with a series of solid breaks. A 29 at 96-98 gave Varun a 125-98 lead, and he carried forth the momentum to take the first frame 152-141. Neither player stayed at the table for an extended length of time in the second frame, but middling breaks of 22, 26 and an unfinished 28 gave Varun the frame 151-89. As Manoj struggled to string together a double-digit break, Varun grew in confidence, exemplified by a number of smooth long in-offs. Breaks of 25, 23 and 35 handed him the third frame 150-71, before he began the fourth with a 41. His next turn at the table yielded the highest break of the match, a 65, including 15 straight winning hazards on the red. It didn’t take long after that for Varun to finish things off, taking the frame 151-36 and with it the title. The result (final): Varun Kumar (MCC) bt M.C. Manoj (MCC) 152-141, 151-89, 150-71, 151-36. — Sports Reporter
