WELL DONE: The winners of the Vestas National Laser Coastal sailing championship in Chennai on Wednesday. From left: Rajesh Choudhary, Varun Thakkar and Gajender Singh.

CHENNAI: Varun Thakkar, Rajesh Choudhary and Gajender Singh had chosen to opt out of the third and final race of the day having already sealed the overall championship title in their respective categories — laser 4.7, laser standard and laser radial — in the first two races of the Vestas National Laser Coastal sailing championship in Chennai.

It’s become a ritual for Rajesh Choudhary (Army Yachting Node) to win in his category for the last six years or so. There wasn’t much trouble for Rajesh in the first race from his opponents despite the fact that he had to use all his strengths to tame the strong wind to his advantage. He was trailing Jasvir Singh in the second race till the second downward wind. From thereon, Rajesh picked up speed to emerge the champion.

Tamil Nadu Sailing Association’s Varun Thakkar tried his level best in the first race to finish first. By this time, he knew that he had bagged the overall title and therefore in the second race, Varun “relaxed a bit” to come second.

Gajender Singh (AYN) encountered no challenge in the laser radial category finishing first in both the races.

Rohini Rau of Royal Madras Yacht Club emerged the women’s National champion in the laser radial section.

The results:

Laser Standard: Race 10: 1. Rajesh Choudhary (AYN), 2. Jasvir Singh (AYN), 3. Harihara (AYN); Race 11: Rajesh Choudhary (AYN), 2. Jasvir Singh (AYN), 3. B.K. Rout (AYN); Race 12: Parvinder (AYN), 2. Harihara (AYN), 3. B. Mohapatra (EME Sailing Association, Hyd).
