Suraj stuns Nikhil Reddy

BANGALORE: H. Suraj shocked the top seed Nikhil Reddy 6-1, 6-2 to enter the boys’ under-16 singles semifinals of the BCI–AITA Talent Series (under-16 & under-18) championship at the Bangalore City Institute courts here on Wednesday.

The second seed Vasanth Kumar and the third seed S. Raghavendra were also sent packing on a day of upsets. Thomas Premkumar of Tamil Nadu defeated Vasanth Kumar 6-2, 6-1, while J.S. Arun Raj defeated the third seed S. Raghavendra 6-3, 6-4 and entered the semifinals. Arun Raj also made the under-18 singles semifinals with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Rohan Gaonkar.

In the under-18 singles, the top seed Rashien Samuel, notched up another easy win to enter the semifinals. Rashien crushed J. Arun Prashanth 6-1, 6-0 and he is joined in the last four by Nikhil Reddy and Tamil Nadu’s Monish Rajer.

In the girls’ section, the top seed Preethi Ujjini entered both the girls’ under-16 and under-18 singles semifinals. Preethi defeated Devika A. Kumar 6-1, 6-3 in the under-16 singles and later accounted for Anitha Yadav 6-1, 6-2 in the under-18 singles quarterfinals.

Boys: Under-18 singles: Rashien Samuel bt Arun Prashanth 6-1, 6-0; J.S. Arun Raj bt Rohan Gaonkar 6-4, 7-6(5); Nikhil Reddy bt J. Thomas Prem Kumar 6-0, 7-5; Monish Rajer bt Harsh Manjunath 6-0, 6-0. Under-16 singles: H. Suraj bt Nikhil Reddy 6-4, 6-2; J.S. Arun Raj bt S. Raghavendra 6-3, 6-4; Rohan Gaonkar bt S. Arvind 6-3, 6-0; Thomas Prem Kumar bt Vasanth Kumar 6-2, 6-1.

Girls: Under-18 singles: Preethi Ujjini bt Anitha Yadav 6-1, 6-2; Pooja R. Patil bt Shruthi Narayani 6-4 (retd.); S.P. Ritu bt Devika A. Kumar 6-2, 6-0; S. Spoorthi bt Shikha N. Singh 6-0, 6-2. Under-16 singles: Preethi Ujjini bt Devika A.Kumar 6-1, 6-3; S.P. Ritu bt Pooja R. Patil 6-2, 6-3; Syeda Rehanuma bt Shruthi Narayani 7-6(3), 6-1; S. Spoorthi bt Abhipsa Rath 6-0, 6-0.
