NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday said the withdrawal of the Interpol red corner notice against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi at the CBI’s behest was another step by the Manmohan Singh government to bury the Bofors case. “Coming in the wake of the failure to successfully prosecute all those involved in the bribery case, it is evident that as long as there is a Congress-led government in office, the subversion of justice will continue. The Congress leadership has to answer to the people for this cover-up,” the Polit Bureau said in a statement. The party also welcomed the Supreme Court’s order directing the Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe a fresh complaint against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other Cabinet Ministers for their alleged role in the “State-sponsored” pogroms of 2002. “It is imperative that the SIT investigate the complaint and submit their conclusions within the three-month timeframe set by the court. It is shameful that the BJP continues to defend those responsible for the carnage in Gujarat.” The Polit Bureau also welcomed the Sri Lankan government’s decision to halt combat operations using heavy weapons and airplanes against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. The party said the cessation should open the way for the rescue of tens of thousands of Tamil civilians still in the war zone. It said the LTTE had to stop holding people by force and facilitate their safe passage. The Sri Lankan government, it said, should allow the International Committee of the Red Cross and other agencies to enter the affected areas.
