Varun Gandhi
LUCKNOW: BJP candidate from Pilibhit Varun Gandhi on Tuesday presented his case before a three-member Advisory Board, which is going into the maintainability of his detention by the Uttar Pradesh Government under the National Security Act (NSA). At present he is on parole.
The board, led by the senior judge of the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Pradeep Kant, and comprising Justices (retired) P.K. Sareen and S.N. Sahay, conducted in-camera proceedings for about 90 minutes here, after Mr. Gandhi’s arrival at 4 p.m. Thereafter, Mr. Gandhi was whisked away in a maroon colour vehicle from the High Court premises amid tight security.
Mr. Gandhi was booked under the NSA on March 29 following the alleged hate speeches he delivered at election meetings in Pilibhit district. The police lodged four FIRs against him on March 28, following violence indulged in by his supporters in the town after his arrest.
Mr. Gandhi challenged the invoking of the NSA against him by the district magistrate on the directions of the government.
