CHENNAI: Five persons were arrested for providing public address system and other materials for a demonstration organised by a group of advocates on the Madras High Court premises, near the Aavin parlour, on Tuesday. The demonstration was held to protest the killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka. According to police sources, Mani (59), Ezhumalai (35), Ravi (56), Venkatesan (54) and Munusamy (30) were arrested based on a complaint lodged by Subramaniam, Overseer of the Madras High Court. They had given loudspeakers, ‘pandal’ and other electrical gadgets for the demonstration on Monday. The accused were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody. The loudspeaker and other items seized by the police from the demonstration place were kept in the custody of the Flower Bazaar police, the sources said and added that prior police permission had to be obtained for providing such gadgets in public places. Meanwhile, advocates were surprised to find the gate of the High Court near the Aavin outlet locked on Tuesday. The reason for the closure was not officially made known. Usually, demonstrations and processions by advocates are held and start near the gate. Tamil Nadu Advocates Association president S.Prabakaran said the closure would set a “wrong precedent.” Madras High Court Advocates Association president R.C.Paul Kanagaraj said that he met the Chief Justice in connection with the matter. Later, in the evening the court authorities ordered that the gate be opened.
