Indian Navy arrests 9 pirates

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Indian Navy has thwarted a bid to hijack an Italian cruise liner and arrested nine pirates off Seychelles.

INS Nirdeshak, a hydrographic survey vessel equipped with a Chetak helicopter and interceptor boats, along with Spanish frigate Numancia and a French maritime reconnaissance aircraft foiled the attempt, Indian Navy sources said here on Tuesday. The captured pirates may be handed over to Seychelles authorities.

The ship will return to patrol the area.

Armed with automatic rifles, the pirates attacked the liner m.s. Melody with over 1,400 passengers and crew on Saturday evening.

The ship fended off the pirates but simultaneously sent an SOS message, which led to the international response.
