Tribals appeal for peace

Sushanta Talukdar

GUWAHATI: Apex bodies of six tribes of southern Assam’s North Cachar Hills district have issued a joint appeal to the militant Dima Halam Daogah (Jewel Gorlossa faction) to shun violence and stop attacking local trains. They urged the government and the outfit to sit for peace talks.

The Dimasa, Hmar, Jeme Naga, Kuki, Biate and Hrangkhol tribes expressed concern over the suspension of train servicesbetween Lumding and Badarpur in the wake of a series of attacks by DHD (Jewel) militants.

The outfit attacked six trains in the past fortnight. Three security personnel and a railway staffer were killed and 17 passengers injured in the incidents.
