The price of sugar

Candidates canvassing for votes in the tribal-dominated villages of Udaipur Lok Sabha constituency in southern Rajasthan are confronted by rural women with a common question: “Vote maang riya ho, khaand ro kain bhaav hai?” (You are asking for votes. What is the price of sugar?). The rising prices of sugar and other essential items have worried both the Congress and BJP activists. The women electorate does not seem to be concerned about the parties in power in the Centre or in the State. It is futile for the BJP nominee to point out that Congress heads the government in the Centre. Similarly, the Congress candidate is at a loss of words when grilled about soaring prices.
