True to their word
Over 20,000 adivasis from 24 villages in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district did not vote in the elections on April 23 to protest the non-implementation of the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of rights) Act. An adivasi panchayat held at Vaijapur in Chopda taluka in April had decided that these villages would not vote and hence they boycotted the elections. Adivasis from the Pawara, Kokni and Bhil communities were angry that the Jalgaon administration was denying them legitimate rights over forest land they had been cultivating for long. Of the total 22,800 votes in the 24 villages, only 1191 votes were polled. The tribals were also miffed that no political party took up the issue of their land rights.
