THANJAVUR: Digital libraries will be the key areas in future which need to be developed to achieve excellence by Educational Institutions, said Harish Chandra, Librarian, Indian Institute of Technology, here on Saturday.

Inaugurating a workshop on ‘Management of digital resource, E-Journals and Bibliographical database development organised by the Arjun Singh Library of Periyar Maniammai University here, Mr. Harish Chandra said that library is a store house of knowledge. With advent of information technology, whole concept of library has changed.

Libraries are multi academic activity centres in the universities and colleges. There is a need for chanting the role of librarians, teachers and students in the context of digital libraries.

K. Nithyanandan, Library Special Officer, Anna University, said that the university developed the digital library based on the experience of Indian Institute of Technology.

Anna University Alumni Association gave Rs.50 lakh and the university provided Rs. 50 lakh to develop the digital library.

Digital library is nothing but a paper less library that provides electronic information and that uses electronic resources. E-books, E-Journals and online journals should be available at the digital library.

With price escalation of electronic goods on one hand and declining allotment to libraries on the other hand, higher educational institutions have joined together and started a consortium for sharing information. Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science and Anna University are members in it. Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers is bringing out thirty per cent of the science and technology publications in the world. Consortium helps in getting these publications at a reasonable rate. Google has now become our friend, philosopher and guide, Mr. Nithyanandam said.

D. Kumar, Dean (Research), presided over the function, and K. Thandavamurthy, Director of the Arjun Singh Library, also spoke.
