Excise wins title

KOCHI: Central Excise defeated Golden Threads by a solitary goal and won the Cochin Premier League football title at the Maharaja’s Stadium here on Thursday.

Satheesh scored the match-winner in the 55th minute after being put through by Roshan.

The league which began with much fanfare a few weeks ago had a disappointing finish with two of the best teams, Viva Kerala and Malabar United, pulling out of the semifinals.

Viva Kerala, which gained promotion to the I-League a few days ago, withdrew as many of its stars returned home after the second division National League’s final phase in Haryana. The Cochin League took a break after the league phase to help Viva Kerala play the semifinal. Unfortunately, the Viva players were too weary to player the local league. — Principal Correspondent
