Jems Cricket Club is champion

Krishnagiri: Jems Cricket Club defeated Strikers Cricket Club by 20 runs and emerged champion of the Janson Furnishers-Krishangiri District Cricket Association Twenty20 cricket tournament here recently.

After posting 157 for seven, Jems, thanks to Bettaiya (three for 23), bundled out its opponent for 137.

The scores:

Final: Jems CC 157 for seven in 20 overs (P. Ramajayam 55) bt Strikers CC 137 in 20 overs (P. Bettaiya three for 23).

Special awards:

Player of tournament: P. Ramajayam (Jems). Best bowler: A. Nagaraj (Jems). Best batsman: Felix (Strikers).

Pawars dominate

At Udhagamandalam, PBH Pawar and his 14-year-old grandson Vashista Pawar made merry in the season’s opening golf tournament at the Ootacamund Golf Club course recently.

The 72-year-old Pawar Senior, with a six under score of 42 points, walked away with the MCT Muthiah Silver Salver while Vashista, with a score of plus two, clinched the PPI Trophy.

Vashista also played his best ever round of one over on the course on day three and tallied 42 points for the Jai Hind Mills Trophy.

Siva, Srinivasan excel

At Namakkal, a fine all-round performance by R. Srinivasan (five for 28 and 55 not out) and an effective spell by C. Sivasubramanian (five for eight) enabled SPB Cricket Club (Pallipalayam) score a six-wicket win over NKCC (Namakkal) in the Canara Bank-DCAN first division league at the SPB Colony grounds recently.

The scores:

NKCC (Namakkal) 106 in 20.4 overs (K.V. Bhasker 25, R. Srinivasan five for 28, C. Sivasubramanian five for 8) lost to SPB CC (Pallipalayam) 107 for four in 25.4 overs (R. Srinivasan 55 not out, Rajaganapathy three for 19).

Chess tournament

The Coimbatore District Sports and Games Welfare Association will conduct its annual district-level chess tournament for children in the under-8, 11, 14 and 17 age group at the Geetha Hall on April 25 and 26.

Spot entries can be made at the venue between 8 and 9 a.m. on April 25.

Ball badminton camp

The Coimbatore District Ball Badminton Association, in association with Sakthi Sugars and Sakthi Soya, will conduct a summer camp for boys and girls at the Nehru Stadium ball badminton courts from May 3 to 17.

The camp will be held between 7.30 & 10.30 a.m.

Vashista lifts title

At Udhagamandalam, Vashista Pawar of Coimbatore, with a final tally of 158, edged out Bangalore’s Syed Saqib Ahmed and emerged champion of the VTX junior and sub-junior south zone open golf championship, which concluded at the Ootacamund Gymkhana golf course on Wednesday.

The 14-year-old Vashista, who trailed by two shots on the opening day, played an eight over 78 on the final day for the title.

Prafful Ahmed of Bangalore finished his outing with a 161 along with Saqib, but the former with a better second half edged out the latter for the second spot.

The results:

Group A-B (combine): Vashista S. Pawar (Coimbatore) 158; 2. Prafful Chand (Bangalore) 161 (better second half); 3. Syed Saqib Ahmed (Bangalore) 161.

Group B: 1. Vashista Pawar 158; 2. Syed Saqib Ahmed 161; 3. Nikitha Arjun (Bangalore).

Group C: 1. Haridar Reddy (Hyderabad) 165; 2. Gaurav Bhandari (Bangalore) 168; 3. Shivnaren Srinivasan (Chennai) 174.
