Overwhelmed by people’s turnout, says Jayalalithaa

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa said here on Monday that she was overwhelmed by the large turnout of people, particularly women, at her election meetings, despite the hot weather.

After campaigning for AIADMK candidates in Theni and Dindigul constituencies, Ms.Jayalalithaa told reporters that she covered six constituencies since Saturday.

“Very encouraging”

Asked for her comments about the tour, she said: “I have a good impression. People listened to my speech with rapt attention. It is very encouraging. I am confident that the AIADMK front will sweep the polls in all 40 Lok Sabha constituencies, including Puducherry.”

Asked why she chose to campaign travelling in a helicopter, Ms.Jayalalithaa said: “It is a new attempt. It actually takes time to cover all the constituencies by road. People will adjust to such changes. Hence, I felt it would be better to fly and reach out to people all over the State. Despite the summer, you (journalists) see the crowds at the meetings. I am touched to see them come in large numbers.”

Asked about the DMK president’s reported remarks about LTTE chief Prabakaran, she said, “I will call a press meet soon.”
