“Syllabus for the course designed to produce graduates with broad exposure” TIRUPATTUR: Industrial opportunities for biotech students are promising as the syllabus is designed to produce graduates with broad exposure, S.Manian, Director School of Life Sciences, Dean of Research, Bharathiyar University, Coimbatore, said here on Monday. Inaugurating the national conference on “Emerging trends in biotechnology and industrial opportunities,” “Zenera’09” organised by the Department of Biotechnology, Sri Nandhanam College of Engineering and Technology, Tirupattur, he said biotechnology was a synthetic subject. The syllabus for the course had been designed to produce graduates with broad exposure. The stream of study offered better opportunities, if the students preferred to pursue higher education. Stating that lot of industrial opportunities would be available for the biotech students, Dr Manian said India was a combination of biodiversity and traditional knowledge. Any country with a combination of biodiversity and traditional knowledge was bestowed with promising future. These two aspects determined the strength of a country. But for students there was a need to develop the communication skill. The academic standard had to be maintained and the students should not compromise on the quality of education imparted.
Moreover, educational institutions should encourage bringing in research projects. Research projects were a source of funding for the research institutions. Added to this educational institutions should encourage the researchers to publish their projects in standard science journals. Any institution would not get recognition without publication. Industrial collaborationAnother way to promote research-oriented activities in educational institutions was through industrial collaboration. Projects with social relevance would lead to industrial collaboration. Every institutions should have a legal cell, patent cell and application cell. This would help promote good inventions. Application cell played a major role in forecasting the value of invention. Such facilities were needed in educational institutions to promote research activities. P.M.M.Nandagopal, Chairman, Sri Nandhanam College of Engineering and Technology and E.Vidyasagaran, Senior Scientist, S.Murugesh, Head, Department of Biotechnology, spoke.
