SPIRITUAL EVENT: Priests performing Mahakumbabishekam to Veludayanpattu Sri Siva Subramania Swamy Temple in Neveyli Township on Sunday. NEYVELI: After a gap of 18 years Mahakumbabishekam was performed to the ancient Veludayanpattu Sri Siva Subramania Swamy Temple in Neveyli Township here on Sunday. A large number of devotees from far flung areas as well as the residents of the Neyveli Township gathered at the temple to witness the event. A team of Sivachariyars led by S.V.Swaminatha Sivachariyar of Mayiladuthurai conducted the rituals. According to the lore the temple was 800 years old and was unique in terms of the arsenal wielded by the presiding deity. While Lord Muruga generally wielded the spear, in the Neyveli temple he was holding the bow, signifying that he assumed the role of a hunter. Hence, the temple was popularly known as Villudayanpattu Murugan temple. However, over the period of time it had come to be known as Veludayanpattu Murugan temple. When the vast stretch of land was acquired for the setting up of the Neyveli Lignite Corporation the temple too had come under its purview and ever since it was being maintained by the NLC management. The last kumbabishekam was performed in 1991. Joint Commissioner of Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment N.Thirumagal, Assistant Commissioner Jagannathan and other officials participated.
