Sri Lankan troops seek to open new road access

B. Muralidhar Reddy

Over 2,857 civilians cross over from the no-fire zone

Colombo: The Sri Lankan military on Sunday said its troops positioned in the vicinity of the no fire zone (NFZ) in the north, where an estimated 70,000 civilians were being held by the LTTE, were engaged in an operation to open up a new road access to the NFZ.

A statement by the Defence Ministry here said soldiers of 53 and 58 Divisions were just 700 to 800 metres away from the bridge on A-35 road (Paranthan-Mullaithivu) at Vellaimullaivaikkal on Saturday night.

On Saturday, over 2,857 civilians from the NFZ sought refuge with soldiers manning the defences of Puthumathalan West. It was the largest crossover in a single day in recent months.

The military said the civilians had started arriving in large groups since afternoon using the safe routes opened by troops. Citing battlefield reports, the Ministry said the troops encountered stiff resistance from the Tiger cadres holed up in the NFZ. “Intercepted radio transmissions revealed that 17 LTTE cadres were killed and 22 others suffered injuries in the day’s fighting.”
