Gopalaswami wanted further probe Chawla, Quraishi did not want the issue to remain open NEW DELHI: The Election Commission has rejected a plea for the disqualification of United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi as a Member of Parliament for receiving a foreign award. While Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami wanted the matter further probed, Election Commissioners Navin Chawla and S. Y. Quraishi were of the view that the probe should be closed. Views sent to PresidentThe Commission’s views have been sent to President Pratibha Patil for a final decision, said informed sources. The sources said Mr. Gopalaswami felt that an enquiry was required into the complaint filed by a Kerala lawyer, seeking Ms. Gandhi’s disqualification because her acceptance of a Belgian national award amounted to her owing allegiance to that country’s Constitution. However, Mr. Chawla and Mr. Quraishi did not want the issue to remain open. PTI quoted Mr. Gopalaswami as saying that he did not wish to say anything “because this is a case on which the decision will be taken by the President. So until the decision is taken, there can be no discussion on this.” Ms. Gandhi was conferred the “Order of Leopold,” Belgium’s second highest civilian award and an honorary doctorate during her visit to Brussels in November 2006. Acting on the lawyer’s complaint, the Commission served notice to Ms. Gandhi in February, asking her to respond within three weeks. It also sought from the Ministry of External Affairs details of the “Order of Leopold.”
