THANJAVUR: A Rs.62-lakh bio-gasifier will be available from June this year at Shanthivanam burial ground at Sundaram Nagar here. The gasifier will use firewood for producing syngas (short for synthesis gas) to burn bodies.

According to K.G. Umapathi, Commissioner, Thanjavur Municipality, gasifier cremation is economical and environment-friendly. The system runs on one horsepower blower, thereby requiring minimum electricity as against the electrical crematorium that requires 100 kw power.

It is also 50 per cent cheaper than conventional firing with wood. The gasifier takes only 80 minutes for burning a body while it takes three to four hours in a pyre.

A building for the gasifier has come up. “In all probability, the gasifier cremation will start in June,” the Commissioner said.

“People have to pay only Rs.300. After commissioning, the gasifier will be maintained by self-help groups,” Mr. Umapathi said.

The facility will consist of a cremation bed fixed on a moving trolley. The burner will be fitted to one end of the dome with refractory lining inside. The body will be kept on a trolley bed and rituals, if any, can be completed before pushing the trolley into the dome. The dome has a pair of doors which will then be closed.

Wood gasifier

A wood gasifier will be used for generation of gas for the special burner.

While people welcome the introduction of the gasifier, they also want the Municipality to fix a similar facility at the Rs.75 lakh-electric crematorium near Raja Gori burial ground which is rusting now.
