Petition seeks release of Nalini, others
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Friday ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation and the State Home Department to file counter to a petition seeking production of seven persons lodged in the Vellore prison in connection with the case relating to the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and setting them at liberty. A Bench, comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and C.T. Selvam, adjourned the case to April 20.
In his petition, E. Veluchamy of Tiruchirappalli submitted that the detenus were liable to be released as their arrest was grossly illegal and untenable; they were “not guilty of the alleged offence of assassination; and the prosecution story of SIT is found to be in conflict with that of the report of the Jain Commission.” The petitioner sought a direction to produce Nalini, Santhan, Murugan, Robert Payas, Jeyakumar, Ravi and Arivu before the court and release them.
