The fish-kill was noticed on Wednesday Fish may have died due to depletion of oxygen in water BANGALORE: Thousands of fish in Gidada Konenahalli Lake on the outskirts of Bangalore city were found dead over the last three days, and the dead fish floating in the water has caused unbearable stench to the village people in the vicinity. The fish-kill that was first noticed on Wednesday continued even on Friday, and thousands of fish that have died over the last three days were seen floating in the lake. Reason The fish-kill in the lake, which is located near the Jnanabharathi campus of Bangalore University, is believed to have been caused due to the depletion of oxygen in water. ComplaintVillagers have also complained that polluted water was allowed to be let into the lake. “Though the public have been complaining about the fish-kill and the stench, officials concerned have not visited the lake. As most of the police personnel are on election duty, the staff manning the police station did not know whom to contact,” a police official attached to the Ramanagara district police said. Though it is on the outskirts of Bangalore city, the Gidada Konenahalli Lake comes under Ramanagara district. Recent caseAs recently as October 2008, fish-kill was noticed in Siddapura Lake when thousands of dead fish were found floating. Large-scale fish-kill has been noticed in Puttenahalli, Lalbagh, Ulsoor, Vengayanakere lakes in Bangalore in the recent past.
