‘Ministers, MPs and MLAs barred from entering polling stations’
Special Correspondent
VILLUPURAM: Ministers, Members of Parliament and Members of Legislative Assembly are barred entry into the polling stations but for exercising their franchise. Otherwise they cannot step into any polling stations on the pretext of carrying out inspection or garnering information on the voting pattern, said R.Palanisamy, District Collector and District Electoral Officers. The Collector was addressing the polling officials drawn from all the 11 Assembly constituencies in the district here on Thursday.
He noted the visually impaired voters could be escorted by persons who had completed 18 years of age and the escorts need not be the voters in the same booth. If there happened to be a queue at the closing time the officials should issue number tokens to those at the tail-end of the queue and once they cast their votes the day’s process should be completed.
The Collector stated that in all 17,629 applications were received for inclusion in the electoral rolls.
All these applications should be duly verified and the incomplete applications or those of the non-cooperative persons could be withheld.
The Collector observed that 20 polling stations located on the Kalvarayan Hills were not accessible over phone and the officials should make arrangements for telecommunication facilities there.
