32 cases booked

TIRUCHI: Thirty-two cases, most of them under the Tamil Nadu Open Places (Prevention of Disfigurement) Act, have been registered against various political parties for violation of the election model code of conduct in the district so far, according to Collector T.Soundiah.

These included 19 cases booked in rural areas and 13 in city limits. A majority were against the DMDK, which has been slapped with 14 cases in rural police limits and five in city limits. Three cases have been registered against the DMK and two against the AIADMK in rural areas. In city limits, four cases have been booked against the AIADMK, two against the BSP and one each against the Shiv Sena and Makkal Tamil Katchi, Mr.Soundiah told reporters here on Saturday.

Mr. Soundiah said committees, comprising officers in the rank of deputy superintendents of police and assistant returning officers, have been constituted in each Assembly segment to monitor the implementation of the election code of conduct. He disclosed that about 40,733 applications, seeking inclusions and deletions in the electoral rolls, have been received in the district so far since March 3. The details of the applications were being computerised and instructions were awaited from the Election Commission on the action to be taken over them.

Rita Kumar, V. Usha and T.V. Mohandoss have been appointed as poll observers for the Tiruchi Lok Sabha constituency.

While Rita Kumar will look after the Tiruchi East and West Assembly segments, Ms. Usha will be in charge of Srirangam and Tiruverambur segments. Mr. Mohandoss will oversee the Gandharvakottai and Pudukottai segments falling under the constituency.
