The United States Air Force has chosen seven “supermen” to be the first Americans to make a journey into space, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) disclosed in Washington on April 7. The seven Americans will make up the crew of the first United States manned satellite to be launched into space under a programme known as “Project Mercury”. NASA called the men its “Mercury Astronauts.” Their names may be announced later this week. The NASA announcement recalled that it had been planned originally to have a crew of 12 on the first manned satellite, but officials decided later to narrow the number to seven.
